Meeting Overview

The 2014 UK & Ireland Annual Partners and Managers Conference took place on 27-29 November at The Belfry, West Midlands, where a world-class gold course and a multi-million pound refurbishment set the scene.

Pre-conference golf
As four-time host to the Ryder Cup, there seemed no better way to open this year’s UK & I annual meeting at The Belfry than with a pre-conference round of golf at the famous PGA Championship golf course where 16 delegates took part.

‘Back to Basics’
The conference theme this year was ‘Back to Basics: Growing your profits’ attracting 103 delegates from across the UK & Ireland, Europe and this year further afield, including New York, thanks to the attendance of MGI’s Area Coordinator for North America, Joe Tarasco as a guest speaker.

Day one, Thursday 27 November
The first day started in the afternoon, easing delegates in with an inspiring story about innovation and entrepreneurship shared by guest speaker, Sahar Hashemi OBE, the founder of Coffee Republic and author of The Switched on Mindset. It was a refreshing reminder for delegates that whatever role they perform, they can still be innovative and enterprising.

Day two, Friday 28 November
Day two included presentations along a similar theme to the previous day. The morning started with an opening presentation by principle sponsor SWAT UK on the top five tips to improving profitability and a presentation by Rob Kendall from member firm Harrison Beale & Owen (HB&O), titled The Journey to Profit. Rob closed his presentation with a memorable firm video from the cutting room floor.  Paula Swann-Jones from member firm Rowley’s shared her story on Successful Niche Marketing, targeting GPs within the NHS and how they overcame complexities to grow business in this area by 400%.

Member firms CBW, Milsted Langdon and HB&O collaborated on their International Corporate Finance capability in a presentation by Odhran Dodd, Susannah Adams, and Greg Philp that helped to raise awareness of the capability and encourage member firms to keep business in the alliance.

In the afternoon, MGI’s Area Coordinator for North America, Joe Tarasco, spoke on the controversial subject of Creative Profit Sharing and how this works in the US, whilst guest speaker Gerald Ratner, former Chairman of Ratners Jewellery group, shared his story Back to Basics, following his ill-judged comments that accelerated a spiral decline for Britain’s biggest jewellery group. Gerald captivated delegates with an incredible story of success and failure and how he turned his life around to become a multi millionaire success story again.

On both evenings, delegates gathered for drinks and dinner at the Woodlands Suite Foyer, providing plenty of opportunity for members to network. In keeping with the golf theme, delegates then tried their hand at some crazy golf fun on the last night of the conference.

Day three, Saturday 29 November
On the third and final day of the conference, guest speaker John Hotowka shared his wit and wisdom on how to achieve more, using humour and magic and some audience participation to deliver a clear business message.
