3rd November 2012
The MGI European Area Meeting took place in Porto, Portugal, on 14 to 16 June.
The event, which had the theme Growing Business Together, was hosted by Patricia Mendes, partner at MGI & Associados. Delegates attended from a wide range of countries for what was an interesting and informative conference.
Delegates were welcomed with a drinks reception on the Thursday, followed by a presentation by Patricia Mendes and then dinner at the Hotel Infante Sagres. This also provided an excellent opportunity for delegates to network and exchange ideas in an informal setting.
Friday saw a busy programme of talks and presentations. Following a short introduction by Patricia Mendes, delegates heard a talk by Professor Gareth Jones of the London Business School, posing the question ‘Why should anyone be led by you?’.
Presentations were also given by new members from Finland (Auditors Network Finland) and Belgium (Parmentier BVBA), followed by reports from the respective European Circle leaders – Thomas Althoff from the Central European Circle, Laszlo Killik from the Eastern European Circle, Francesco Bartolucci from the Mediterranean Circle and Eric Emilsson from the Nordic Circle.
The afternoon session saw Luis Folhadela, director at Eaglestone, speak on the subject of adapting to change, while MGI’s international marketing director Clive Bennett gave a presentation on MGI’s new competitive strategy, on which a final decision will be made at MGI’s AGM in Cyprus in October. Friday was concluded with dinner at Caves Ferreirinha, one of Portugal’s most prestigious wine cellars founded in 1751.
The Saturday morning session included presentations on the European Area reports and accounts, as well as changes in the ECC membership. Delegates also heard a talk on the conference theme of Growing Business Together by Francesco Bartolucci, Thomas Althoff and Kees Euser, which focused on business exchange initiatives.
Finally, delegates were given the opportunity to debate marketing and business exchange techniques and initiatives before the conference was closed.
