MGI UK & Ireland Annual Partners and Managers Conference
MGI UK & Ireland Annual Partners and Managers Conference
9th July 2013
THE MORALITY OF BUSINESS
The 2013 MGI UK & Ireland Annual Conference attracted 100 delegates from member firms, both UK and international. The conference provided the opportunity for member firms to explore the morality of business, including ethics, integrity and the public interest, and what this all means.
With bankers, whistleblowers and tax avoidance schemes seemingly dominating news headlines over the past year, the ethics of the business world have never been under closer scrutiny than they are today. With this in mind, the 2013 MGI UK & Ireland Annual Conference turned the spotlight on the morality of business, including:
what constitutes ethical, and unethical business practice
maintaining ethical business practice with clients, professional contacts and other member firms, as well as when doing business across different jurisdictions
blowing the whistle on unethical business practice.
Our programme of high-profile speakers included Nick Leeson, the rogue trader whose unchecked risk-taking led to the collapse of Barings Bank in 1995 – one of the biggest financial scandals of the 20th century.
Our other guest speakers included former MI5 agent Annie Machon, Olympus whistleblower Michael Woodford, and Richard Brooks, author of ‘The Great Tax Robbery’. We also heard from Liz Higgs, Ethics and Integrity Manager at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).
