At the end of April we had the Managing Partners forum, which was mainly focused on the MGI network debate. The UK and Ireland managing partners were thoroughly engaged on the day which led to the issue of minutes from the meeting summarising the collective view of a better way forward. On 4 June we held a Marketing forum. The morning was hosted by Vicki Banthorpe of SWAT UK who reminded all present of lots of best practice tips and highlighted what she has seen as being particularly successful in other firms. In the afternoon we had a presentation by Maxine Brock, MGI World Marketing Manager, on the very broad role she has to take MGI forward with regard to marketing. This was followed by a round table discussion with those present sharing their experiences; both good and bad.
On 17 June we held our second ever Insolvency forum with delegates from CBW, Milsted Langdon and Muras Baker Jones. We had an engaging day highlighting that, whilst for some businesses this is not the most buoyant of sectors to be in, all those present were very active and phrases like ‘busy and growing’ and ‘business as usual’ were frequently used. It was noted that fee pressure seems to be ever-increasing, with crazy fees being charged by some people low-balling. The on-going case studies that the attendees share always raise eyebrows, with examples this time of a small debt resulting in the debtor being jailed for contempt of court, the precise meaning of the word ‘stay’, the power of proxies and the interesting example of WIP being specifically excluded from an SPA with regard to an administration. The day also gave us a bit of unexpected exercise when we realised that the fire alarm wasn’t just a practice!
Looking forward, the date for the Non-Partner event linked to the SWAT UK training will be 19/20 September. The second Tax forum will be held 2/3 October and the second Managing Partner forum will be held on 4 November.
