26th June 2014
On 28-31 May, I attended the 2014 MGI North America and Latin America Conference at South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida, writes Peter Winter, Managing Partner at Carter Backer Winter.
A substantial part of the programme was devoted to the Network debate with presentations from Clive Viegas Bennett and Maxine Brock. In addition, Dean Zerbe, previous Senior Counsel and Tax Counsel for the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee gave a talk which offered an insight into how US tax legislation is formulated.
On the second say Joe Tarasco led a session about what’s happening in the US in terms of trends in Mergers and Acquisitions and succession planning. Interestingly the US is facing the same issues as the UK in finding successors for our businesses as the Baby Boomer generation start to leave the profession. In the afternoon there was a joint session held with both the North American and the Latin American regions followed by a joint team building exercise.
As usual there were some great opportunities to network with other delegates during the breaks and evening dinners which I think everyone found particularly useful.
I attended the conference with Robin Davies from CBW and, along with Stephen Yeates and Jonathan Farrow from Midgley Snelling and Nigel Rowley from Mackrell Turner Garrett, we were the only non-American delegates.
