Tax Forum

27th March 2014

We had a terrific turn-out for what will be the last forum at the current offices of CBW. The tax forum had 19 delegates representing 12 of the 13 UK and Ireland member firms.

We were joined for the first time by Tom Adcock and RobertMaas from CBW, as well as Charlie Thompson of Muras Baker Jones and Mark Johnson of HB&O.

We started the day with a presentation from Robert Maas on mixed partnerships, which led to a healthy discussion around the table.

There was also a third-party presentation from Silver Lining Film Developments on their SEIS/EIS offerings. Whilst these do offer notable tax benefits, I think it’s fair to say that the attendees were concerned about the lack of track record of this relatively new business.

Other topics discussed on the day included capital allowances, R&D claims, Patent Box and Virtual Cabinet.

The tax forum had little to discuss about the previous week’s Budget.

The desire to run some fee comparisons for different types of work was put forward by Simon Denton. He will email a series of pricing questions to other firms following the meeting.

Those attending also discussed the location for the next tax forum, with Edinburgh being a clear favourite. A likely date for this will be circulated shortly.

Forthcoming

CBW’s new London offices will be the venue for our first Managing Partners Forum of 2014 on 30 April, our next Marketing Forum on 4 June and our Insolvency Forum on 17 June.

Also, don’t forget the MGI UK and Ireland Golf Day, which will be hosted by last year’s winners HB&O. The event takes place at Welcombe Hotel Spa and Golf Club, in Stratford-upon-Avon, on 14 May. If you have not yet signed up or require further information then please speak to Caroline Trainor at HB&O.
