MGI UK & Ireland have enjoyed a busy autumn with three forums held during September and October including the MGI Cloud/MTD Forum, the second Tax Forum and the Marketing/BD Forum.
Cloud Accounting Forum II, 28 September 2017
On September 28th, MGI UK & Ireland hosted its second MGI Cloud/MTD Forum in London, which was attended by a total of ten delegates, representing seven different firms.
Each had a chance to share how their firms have moved forward in the last six months since the first MTD forum, with some having created MTD/cloud websites and specific service offerings. Sage - providers of business software and technology aimed at improving collaboration, compliance, and workflow within accounting businesses - gave an informative presentation. The range and completeness of the services they now offer, made some of those present, reconsider their own strategy with regards to cloud services.
Tax Forum II, 29 September 2017
The next day, on September 29th, MGI UK & Ireland held its second Tax Forum hosted by Muras Baker Jones at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre. The twelve delegates, from six member firms, came well-armed with a range of tax issues and experiences to share with the group, which led to an in-depth and very useful discussion.
To add value to the day, there was a presentation from a local tax specialist, Stephanie Churchill, dealing with domicile and residency issues. This was a useful reminder of the effect of the recent law changes and served to highlight a significant marketing opportunity for other MGI members worldwide now that any property in the UK, owned by anyone around the world, whether directly in a company or in a trust, is subject to IHT upon death of the beneficial owner - something firms around the world may not appreciate and unwittingly fall foul of. There was also a presentation by Tracey Macintosh from Muras Baker Jones, about double dip wills whereby a trust, with both a discretionary fund and a life interest fund, can create a significant tax benefit.
Marketing/BD Forum, 10 October 2017
Finally, on October 10th, the Marketing/BD Forum gathered 10 delegates from 6 member firms, including new member firm F.W. Smith Riches. This was a useful and productive gathering of those responsible for marketing within their firms.
The range of marketing issues discussed included: marketing strategies/plans (if they existed) and how these supported each firm’s business plan, who is involved in marketing, campaigns (both targeted and shotgun), events, marketing materials, web sites, social media, marketing budgets, and the effect of GDPR. MGI Worldwide Marketing Director, Maxine Brock, then presented on the topic of leveraging MGI membership in marketing, explaining that most firms do not exploit this as much as they might. She gave feedback to each firm on aspects of their websites and looked at the power of video and how videos with an MGI angle could be used by both member firms and MGI in their marketing.
