Asia Tax Forum, May 2013
By Maxine Brock, International Marketing Manager, MGI.
The eighth annual Asia Tax Forum took place at Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore this May. I talk to Audrey Danasamy, Executive Director in Asia about the latest news and important developments from the event this year.
Organised by the International Tax Review, the forum has become a key event in the calendar for all tax leaders and executives operating throughout the Asia Pacific region and beyond.
The two-day event attracts over 200 tax professionals from both practice and industry and provides delegates with the opportunity to discuss issues of critical concern and to understand the changing landscape of the tax environment.
Highlights covered:
- Growth in general anti-avoidance rules
- China VAT reform
- The future of tax policy in India
- The tax environment in expanding economies of Indonesia, Myanmar and Vietnam
MGI Asia - Proud sponsors
MGI Asia sponsored the event this year and also conducted a session on “Tax in rapidly changing ASEAN economies”, chaired by Mr Pradeep Dinodia managing partner of MGI firm in New Delhi S R Dinodia & Co with Ms. Ratna Febrina, Partner of S F Consulting, MGI member from Indonesia as a key speaker talking about the latest tax developments in Indonesia.
Audrey Danasamy says “It’s a great opportunity to share ideas and keep abreast of the latest developments and tax issues across the region. It’s an important event and one that we are extremely proud to be associated with, given that MGI Asia were key sponsors of the event this year”.
Key takeaways:
- State Administration for Taxation is rumoured to be in final stages of a follow-up to Circular 698 (indirect share transfers) dealing with group transfer relief
- Aggressive tax audits are the price to pay for doing business in China
- First Indonesian MAP, with Japan, is almost completed
- Myanmar had Foreign Investment Law, 10 double tax treaties and no dividend withholding tax
What our MGI Members thought:
“The ATF featured a stellar line-up of speakers and despite being only a 2-day event, the panel discussions covered substantial ground on a broad range of relevant issues. The forum was also an excellent platform to network with leading industry professionals, tax attorneys and advisors,” said Imran Assan of MGI Menon & Associates, Singapore.
This sentiment was supported by Dickson Leung MGI member from China who said “I was impressed with the calibre of the speakers at the conference and quality of the delegates. This afforded the opportunity to network with tax experts from various industries.”
MGI Asia was represented by our member firms from China, Singapore, Mumbai, Indonesia & New Delhi.
