Thriving against the odds: an update on the MGI Wood Meadow

The MGI Wood Meadow at Mindrum Farm began in 2024 as part of our Rome AGM, where we pledged to plant a tree for every delegate in attendance.
With more than 200 participants and additional voluntary donations, that commitment quickly grew into a significant reforestation initiative.
Working with Tom Fairfax and the dedicated team at Mindrum Farm, the project was designed not just to plant trees, but to create a thriving, biodiverse landscape with a lasting positive impact.
The MGI Wood Meadow has come through its first full growing season in great shape. Earlier this year, unusually dry spring conditions made it one of the hardest years in memory for newly planted trees. Despite that, the meadow has flourished with strong survival rates, a clear sign of the careful preparation and support that went into the project.
Looking ahead
The next stage of planting is now underway. This autumn, acorns will be added to create a small oak copse at the heart of the site, designed to grow as a cluster. Other plants such as raspberries, honeysuckle, and blackberries, are also being introduced to boost biodiversity and create natural shelter for the young trees.
In addition to this, MGI’s support has made it possible to extend the planting beyond the original meadow. Extra tree guards have been used in a neighbouring field, helping establish a new system that supports both crops and livestock. Inspired by this success, another linked project is being developed nearby, funded by the Great Northumberland Forest, further expanding the connected landscape.

Recognition and influence
The Wood Meadow has already attracted attention from the Forestry Commission, visiting groups and researchers, and is being highlighted at key industry events including the Regen Gathering in Jersey and the Agroforestry Show in Rickmansworth. In these forums, the project is being shared as a case study in how private support can unlock innovative and resilient environmental solutions.
A lasting legacy
For MGI, the Wood Meadow represents more than a grove of trees. It stands as a living example of how our support can help create sustainable, nature-positive change that benefits both people and the environment.
