The Power to Grow: stronger together in Asia

History of our host city

Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, is a historic southern Chinese port city with over 37 million people. Founded as Panyu in 214 BC, it became a key port at the Pearl River’s mouth. It later thrived as a major Silk Road hub, evolving into a cosmopolitan trade centre and China’s first port with a permanent foreign community. In modern times, it played a role in the Chinese Revolution and, after economic reforms, grew into a leading economic powerhouse.

Modern Guangzhou

Today Guangzhou is at the centre of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area, the most populous built-up metropolitan region in the world. In 2025, Guangzhou's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) reached 3.2 trillion yuan (approx. USD 441 billion), achieving a real-term growth rate of 4.0%. Guangzhou is experiencing robust economic growth driven by advanced manufacturing (automobiles, electronics, petrochemicals), modern services (finance, logistics, wholesale/retail, professional services) and high-tech industries (AI, robotics, biomedicine, semiconductors, integrated circuits, and low-altitude aerospace).
