After El Salvador's recent move to accept bitcoin as legal currency, MGI Worldwide firms from Guatemala (MGI Chile Monroy), El Salvador (MGI Avelar y Asociados) and Dominican Republic (MGI LT Accountant), quickly joined forces to offer a virtual conference to explain this new development and its implications.

The conference, aimed at clients, professionals and the business community in general, took place on June 25, and following promotion on TV, press & radio, attracted almost 2000 participants mainly from Latin America, but also from Europe and the United States!

Speakers from across Central America

Regional Director for Latin America, Andrea Pallas opened and closed the event which featured presentations from: Oscar Antonio Chile Villalta, from MGI Chile Monroy y Asociados in Guatemala, who explained what cryptocurrencies and bitcoin are. He was followed by José David Avelar, from MGI Avelar & Asociados in El Salvador, who talked about Bitcoin Law. Ricardo Ruiz, from MGI LT Accountant in the Dominican Republic, spoke about the treatment of International Financial Reporting Standards for cryptocurrencies. The conference was rounded up by Oscar Chile Monroy from MGI Chile Monroy y Asociados, who discussed the legal, fiscal and accounting implications of the law in question.

Positive feedback

This event has shown how member firms are able to successfully connect and collaborate in the most varied of ways.

"This Bitcoin law has been passed in El Salvador and is applicable in this country, however, it will have repercussions on the businesses of customers and suppliers around the world. For this reason, the firms of the MGI Worldwide network decided to focus the conference on the implications of bitcoin in business."

"Clients and colleagues have expressed appreciation for the content of the conference. For my part, it has been a great pleasure to have shared the 'stage' as a speaker alongside my colleagues and friends Óscar, Óscar Antonio, and Ricardo."

"The experience was excellent, especially because this is a new topic. The novelty makes it necessary to investigate, study and discover its implications for our profession. It is a subject that is constantly evolving and will be on the table for the next few months, perhaps years."

"Cryptocurrencies are undoubtedly on the rise and having participated in this event, in collaboration with fellow MGI Latin America member firms, undoubtedly helps us to strengthen ties and foster relationships between members of the community."
